Weight Management
Why diets don't work
If you have been dieting for a long time, you are likely familiar with the yo-yo effect and the challenges of maintaining weight loss. Approximately 30-35% of lost weight is regained after a year.
While we are increasingly aware of what constitutes a balanced diet, it can still be confusing to determine what is 'allowed' and what is not. Our stressful lives, along with societal changes, significantly impact our diets. Most diets are not personalized, and we often make mistakes in managing our weight healthily.
Unfortunately, obesity and overweight carry significant secondary health consequences.
In reality, our weight is influenced by numerous factors:
-
Genetics: We are not all born equal. Even identical twins can have different responses to nutrients such as fats, carbohydrates, and glucose in food, partly due to gut bacteria.
-
Medical Reasons: Some conditions, such as hypothyroidism, can cause weight gain. Other conditions, like arthritis, decrease physical activity, which has the same effect.
-
Emotional State: Stress negatively impacts homeostasis, the condition of optimal functioning for the organism, which includes many variables. This hormonal adjustment can lead to increased appetite.
-
Mental Blockages and Trauma: Negative comments during childhood can have long-lasting effects.
-
Sleep Deprivation: Affects body hormones that increase appetite.
-
Emotional Eating: For example, do you tend to eat sugar when you are sad or use food as a reward?
-
Mindfulness: Eating without distractions helps avoid emotional eating.
-
Food Intake: Yes, the more we eat, the more likely we are to gain weight.
-
Regular Meals: Having regular meal times and avoiding snacking, as well as proper sit-down meals, are essential. Meals are also meant to be a social occasion.
-
Reporting Inaccuracies: The average weight in the UK has been increasing over the past 20 years, yet the National Diet and Nutrition Survey reports that the number of calories we self-report has been declining. This contradiction may be due to inaccurate reporting of what and how much we eat.
-
Exercise: While you don’t need to run a marathon, regular movement has been proven to help keep the weight off (think of the pandemic effect).
-
Type of Food: Ultra-Processed Foods (UPF) are among the most harmful inventions of our society, leading to pathologies such as diabetes, which costs nations billions.

Why Choose Hypnotherapy?
By addressing your unconscious mind, hypnotherapy addresses the reasons behind your weight gain and enables a profound change. When working on weight management programs, we tackle underlying issues such as stress, lack of sleep and trauma. We actually advocate encompassing programs to address emotional eating and not programs which focus only on intake control and exercise requirements.
Hypnotherapy overcomes the psychological barriers such as stress-induced emotional eating and help you to review your relationship with food. With the use of positive affirmations and powerful visualisations, we take you on a journey where motivation and commitment are enhanced, changing your eating behaviours. Reducing stress levels help to reduce the cravings. Moreover, the weight loss is more regular and long lasting.

''‘’In a large systematic review and meta-analysis, recently published in the medical journal The BMJ, researchers analyzed 121 trials that enrolled nearly 22,000 overweight or obese adults who followed one of 14 popular diets, […] results at the 12-month mark were disappointing, to say the least:
-
While low-carbohydrate and low-fat diets both resulted in weight loss of about 10 pounds at six months, most of the lost weight was regained within one year.
-
Blood pressure and cholesterol results improved modestly at six months, but generally returned to where they started after a year. One exception was noted: reduced LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels while on the Mediterranean diet persisted at one year
-
There were no major differences in other health benefits between the various diet programs
-
-
Studies have shown that food restriction is a poor mechanism for weight loss and may instead contribute to weight gain. Dieting may also lead to the development of eating disorders, which can be much more deleterious to health than obesity.
-
Adding stress-coping strategies to a healthy eating programme can achieve far better outcomes for weight loss.
-
In a study of 109 overweight and obese patients, Kirsch and colleagues found that participants who received hypnosis for weight loss showed significant weight loss at 8-month and 2-year follow-up assessments, compared to a control group.
-
In a study of 60 obese patients, Cochrane and Friesen found that hypnosis produced greater weight loss than behavioral therapy alone, with an average weight loss of 17.6 pounds compared to 0.9 pounds in the control grou. Moreover, the authors reported that the hypnosis group showed greater improvements in eating behavior and self-esteem than the control group.
-
In a 2018 randomized control trial, regular self-hypnosis users reduced their calorie intake more significantly and lost more weight than those who did not use this technique. Those in the hypnosis group lost an average of 9.6 kilograms (kg) over a year compared with 5.6 kg among those in the control group.

In a small 2020 study, researchers tracked the effects of hypnotherapy on 32 people in a clinically-supervised program. After 10 weeks of guided hypnotherapy, the study participants had a lower body mass index (BMI) and reduced levels of leptin, a hormone associated with obesity, in their blood. In addition, levels of adiponectin, a hormone your body needs to protect you against obesity and type II diabetes, had increased. ''
