Rolling a Cigarette

Some numbers

  • Around one in eight adults  - six million people in the UK - are smokers.

  • There were more than 400,000 hospital admissions in England linked to smoking last year.

  • Research from University College London found that smokers lost an average of 20 minutes of the healthiest years of their lives with each cigarette

Why is it difficult to stop?

Quitting is a challenge for many reasons, largely due to the physical and psychological dependency it creates. Here are some key factors that make it difficult:

1.       Nicotine Addiction: Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found in tobacco. It stimulates the release of dopamine in the brain, creating pleasurable sensations. Over time, the brain becomes dependent on nicotine to experience these feelings, making it hard to quit.

2.       Withdrawal Symptoms: When someone tries to quit, they often experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased appetite, and strong cravings for nicotine. These symptoms can make it very challenging to stay smoke/vape/pouch-free.

3.       Habit and Routine: Smoking/vaping/pouches often become a deeply ingrained habit, linked to daily routines and certain activities (like drinking coffee or socializing). Breaking these associations requires significant effort and behavioural change.

4.       Psychological Dependence: Many people use this as a coping mechanism for stress, anxiety, or boredom. Quitting means finding new ways to manage these emotions, which can be difficult.

5.       Social and Environmental Triggers: Being around other smokers or in environments where smoking is common can trigger cravings and make it harder to resist the urge to smoke.

Should I use vapes to stop smoking?

e-cigarettes are not licensed as medicines, GPs are unable to prescribe vapes to people trying to quit smoking unless there is a locally agreed NHS scheme to do so.

The short answer would be: why would you replace an addiction by another one…?

Are Nicotine pouches addictive?

Yes!

What does the data say?

  • ‘‘Many people believe that they are a safer alternative to cigarettes. A 2022 study of 44 nicotine pouch products found that 26 of the samples contained cancer-causing chemicals and several other chemicals such as: ammonia, chromium, formaldehyde, nickel, pH adjusters, and nicotine salt. Most concerning, nicotine pouches contain high levels of nicotine which is incredibly addictive and harmful to young people in any form. nicotine pouches are so addicting, 73% of young people who have tried nicotine pouches are currently still using them. ’’ (American Lung Association)

  • ‘’They are not an FDA-approved quit medication, and currently research shows that the biggest increase in users is among young people. Only 10% are able to stop smoking and switch to pouches completely. This is not quitting, this is merely switching to another tobacco/nicotine product sold by the tobacco industry to sustain lifelong customers’’. (American Lung Association)

  • ‘’The FDA has not approved any nicotine pouches to help people quit smoking. Researchers need more information to understand the potential effects that nicotine pouches may have on quitting smoking. Nicotine is highly addictive, which can make it hard to quit using tobacco’’ (CDC)

Should I try medication?

In our opinion, why…? Why when there are effective, proven and much simpler solutions?

How many sessions do I need?

Yes, it is possible with just one session and we have regular success in that regard. What other hypnotherapists do not tell you is that the number of sessions is conditioned by how motivated you are to stop (‘my wife wants me to’ is not enough); how bad the cravings are (nobody wants to put weight on); and what work happens on helping you with psychological triggers. Our approach is to work through all these aspects. It may take one session, it may take three. In any case, we work with a schedule that makes us completely available to you from the moment you are ready to start.

If you are concerned about the cost of the cessation package, just do the maths of how much you will save in the years to come…

Additional Hypnotherapy benefits

Health and financial benefits are obvious and what our clients tell us is also how the opportunity to work on their stress and anxiety actually helps them with other aspects of their life.
