Fears and Phobias

Phobias are a type of anxiety that develops when an individual has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about a situation. They can create a lot of stress resulting in the person avoiding specific situations that can happen in their daily life. As a result, the individual gets caught in a loop where they limit or stop exposure to the situation which in turns makes them unhappy and even more stressed.

Causes can vary:

  • They can be the result of a trauma (please note we don’t advocate reliving the trauma and our experience has proven that it’s unnecessary)

  • They can be a behaviour that one has learned and developed during exposure to others (e.g. my Mum is afraid of dogs and so am I)

Types of phobias

There are multiple types of phobias. Some of the ones we’ve treated before are:

  • Medical and bodily phobias: hospitals, doctors, blood, needles, vomiting, dentist, etc.

  • Animal phobias: fear of dogs, snakes, spiders, etc.

  • Environmental and situational phobias: fear of heights, fear of flying, fear of boats, fear of driving, fear of open or confined spaces, etc.

  • Some phobias can be more complex than others (e.g. social phobia) and can impact many aspects of the individual’s professional (e.g. fear of public speaking) and personal life (e.g. fear of being embarrassed).

Phobia Treatment

Phobia treatment includes a combination of hypnotherapy, EMDR+, EFT and NLP.
